Episode 3: No man is an island: using collaboration online to achieve a greater good

You’re ready to start promoting your business online and WHAM. You realize you are all alone.

It doesn’t matter if you’re going to the  movies, dining out at a restaurant, or going on vacation – the are all things that its not a lot of fun to do alone. Please add social media to this list.

I said social media, right? So SOCIAL is right there. How can you be social alone?

But I’m not really outgoing, you say. Well, you’re in luck. Because you get to hide behind your keyboard, so NOW be outgoing.

One of my favorite videos, being the geek that I am, is Brad Paisley’s SO MUCH COOLER ONLINE video. I’ll post the Youtube link in the show notes. Its hilarious.

The reason I reference that video is it’s about him taking on a whole new persona when he goes online. Please be clear, I am not advocating that. I am merely drawing a distinction that being outgoing online will probably be easier for you than in person.

Assuming you are now outgoing, let’s discuss collaboration. The type of online collaboration I am speaking of is forming online connections with other users that support your content and you support theirs.

It is not uncommon for collaborators to organize and form “pods” to notify members when a member makes a post. Engagement on a post within minutes of posting triggers most social algorithms to rank the post for higher distribution, so quick engagement helps a post grow quickly.

It’s a simple as reading comments and replying a comment. You’ll find like-minded people. Even people who don’t create content may support your comment simply because they enjoy your content and they like you and the tone of your posts. Once someone comments on your post, that post is usually displayed to members of the commenters network, further adding to your post distribution.

Game recognizes game. Unless its a direct competitor to your business, you should explore collaboration as a useful tool for increasing post distribution on social media.
